how important is political correctness with your child? October 14, 2005 From a college student who was raised on 'Kidsongs' 16 or 17 years ago:
I'm not sure how I'd feel now about watching this video (it's been about 15 years). I would probably think it's disrespectful of other cultures, cheesy, and terrible. But this is why children are so fascinating; their most stimulating entertainment/education can come from the most unexpected things. Like this video.
In reading the other reviews, I still lucidly remember every song and scene mentioned, with exception to the controversial 'spaghetti incident', interestingly enough.
'Kidsongs' came up in conversation recently, and my excitement was off the charts. I had so much fun recalling all of the songs and images from this video, and finding someone to remember them with was especially rewarding. I wonder if I would have turned out 'better' if I were raised on more culturally respectful material, but with 'Kidsongs' songs as my toddlerhood jams, I still managed to develop some a degree cultural awareness somewhere beyond The Spaghetti Incident. Plus, as a toddler I never made the connection that the French people from France singing 'Frere Jacques' were singing in FRENCH. It also didn't occur to me until I got to high school that my classmate Stephen Chen had Chinese heritage. Abstract concepts like culture, nationality, and language aren't ones toddlers should be expected to quickly comprehend.
In my memory, I love this video.
Children will love it! September 12, 2005 There was a parent that said is "inaccurate" when it comes to the educational value of it, and I do agree. But if what you want is for your tots to have fun, they will! I'm a preschool teacher (children 18-30 months) and my little students love this video. I particularly think that the "spaghetti incident" is pathethic, but the children don't mind it (even though they can get ideas from it). The songs are cute, "singable" and fun (even for the parents that will end up having to hear it over and over again). I brought it home for my daughter to watch and now all my relatives that stop by for visits are singing along!
Love it! February 1, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Our toddlers love all the Kidsongs videos. They are after all childrens videos and this one is by far their favorite. In fact, my neighbors were sending their children to my house to watch it. Now they have their own. Wonderful video!
far from realistic, you'll miss nothing by passing this by September 29, 2003 8 out of 13 found this review helpful
We purchased this video (not our first Kidsongs vid) for our two-year-old and we are very disappointed. It is an extremely inaccurate, ethnocentric view of the world. India, Russia and the Far East are missing from this not-so-global-view and the Italian-messy-spaghetti segment is, at best, insensitive. And although the Spanish song and the Japanese song are each sung in their original language, the other songs are all in English. We were hoping (expecting really) to hear a variety of languages. After all, it's not titled "I'd like to teach the world to sing in English." Though, perhaps it should be. Additionally, the choice of songs leaves a lot to be desired. Could they find no better song to represent Jamaica than "Day-O?" It's not even a Jamaican song! But perhaps worst of all is that they referred to Africa as a country and not as the continent with various, diverse countries that it is. Finally, if African colonialism and religious oppression had a theme song, it would be "Kumbaya!" Yet this is the "African" song that the kids sing. Yes, yes, it's a childrens' video and it's supposed to be light and fun and entertaining. But with a little more effort, it could have also been accurate and educational. We would have gladly paid another couple of dollars for something better.
